Healthy Eating
I would like to take this opportunity to explain to you some of the good practice that continues within the school relating to healthy eating.  I would also like to mention some new initiatives that you might support us with to ensure that Holy Ghost School remains committed to providing the children with healthy eating choices.
School Lunches
The catering staff have been working very closely with Harrisons, the company that provides the meals for the children at lunchtime. The children now have access to a greater range of fresh food that is prepared on the premises and consequently the children are spending much more time eating their food and there is a lot less waste each day. The children always have a fresh salad choice. We are still continuing to find even more ways to improve the food the children receive at lunchtime.

Access to Water
The children are encouraged to drink water every day. All classes have access to drinking water. Does your child have a water bottle in school each day? These can be purchased from the school office.
5 a Day
Each class teacher has been asked to encourage the children to try and eat fruit and vegetables each day as part of the ‘5 a day’ initiative. In KS1 the children have the opportunity to eat fresh fruit that is provided for them at break time. Perhaps you could ask your child about the food they have eaten in school each day and encourage them to eat a portion of their ‘5 a day’ while they are in school.
Lunch boxes
It is very encouraging to see so many children with such healthy lunch boxes. It is very important that children have a well balanced lunch to help them to continue with their learning once they are back in their classrooms for the afternoon.
Birthdays
As we are now looking at further ways to encourage healthy eating in school, have you thought about sending in a healthy treat on your child’s birthday? Instead of sending in a sweet or a chocolate, how about sending in some fruit? For example, some grapes in a bag for each child or how about a clementine, or a packet of raisins or in the summer, some strawberries? Click here to see a delicious treat that a birthday boy in Year 1 brought in!

If you have any questions or comments you wish to make regarding the provision of healthy food at Holy Ghost please send them into school via the school office.  Don’t forget to keep an eye on the school website for further updates about healthy eating as well as fun activities for your child to do at home. Thank you.
